Cam took a cigarette from the bag that hung over her shoulder, then picked up the briefcase and went out on deck.

The night was still warm and very humid, average for an early September night on the harbor. She still could not shake the feeling that something was wrong. As she lit the cigarette, she scanned the wharf, which was empty, and the boats drifting in the harbor. She paced the deck, nodding to Alberto's men as she took drags on her cigarette.

Something was wrong. Something was very wrong. It kept going through her mind. She scanned the wharf again. It was totally deserted. Maybe ... too deserted. Something seemed very familiar about the empty wharf. The nerves in the back of her neck began to tingle.

"Okay, we're ready to deal. There's fifty kilo down below and another two hundred kilos coming into the bay." Nick was at her elbow. "Let's give him the money so they can put the snow in the warehouse. Then we can go home."

It was then that she saw them. A young couple, meandering down the wharf, intent on some intimate talk, slight laughter punctuating their conversation. Just another young couple out for a romantic evening stroll.

But Cam's mind flashed back five years to the night she had walked down a similar wharf in a similar fashion. It had been the night of her first major federal narcotics bust, the night she'd proven herself and drawn the attention of the head of the Federal Task Force. It was at this moment that she recognized the girl. The face was very familiar. It was the young police officer, the rookie, who had busted her in the dark alley that night behind the bar!

Cam searched the wharf again and spied a group of four or five men at the very beginning of the wharf! Damn, why hadn't she been warned that a bust was going down tonight? But then, she hadn’t talked with Maggie or Pauly in a couple days. She didn't want to get caught in this crossfire, or lose her cover ... or her life.

"We got to get out of here!" she hissed to Nick. "We're about to be busted!"

"What?" Nick looked at her incredulously, "You're crazy."

She grabbed him by the jacket. "That couple up there," she motioned toward them with her lips. "Those are narcotics agents. I know. That's the girl that busted me. Take a look at the beginning of the wharf. Those five men are blocking our escape. They're police, Nick! We've got to get out of here. There’s probably twenty more behind that building."

"I have to tell Alberto." Nick started to turn back toward the cabin.

"Idiot! There isn't time." Cam looked around almost frantically for a way to escape. She pulled Nick around the far side of the cabin, away from the wharf.

"Can you swim?" she asked him.

"Swim? You're nuts."

"I hope you can, cause I can't save you and the money." Cam slipped out of her shoes and checked to make sure her gun was firmly snapped into the holster at the back of her waist and cursed herself for having worn a dress and silk jacket, but it was too late to strip now. She slid the strap of her purse through her belt loop and tied it with a tight knot. Then she started to lower herself over the edge of the boat.

"Cameron! What are you ...?" Nick's words were interrupted by a voice from a megaphone hailing the boat from the wharf.

"Aboard the yacht! This is a federal marshal. Put your guns down and ..."

Cam didn't wait for the rest. She grabbed Nick by the jacket and pulled him with her over the side of the ship. Their splash was drowned out by the sound of gunfire. Cam watched frantically until Nick surfaced a few feet from her. He gulped for air as he emerged.

"Shit!" his words exploded. "What do we do now?"

"Keep your voice down," Cam warned. They could hear shouting and running feet as the gunfire above them continued. "Stay low. We have to get into the shadows under the wharf. That's our only chance." They were near the bow. Cam could see a police boat approaching at high speed, its searchlight scanning the yacht. "Take a deep breath. Try to stay underwater until you're around the bow and under the wharf. If you come up between the boat and the wharf, they'll see you and we'll be dead."

Without waiting for Nick's reply, Cam gulped as much air as she could and dove underwater. The case, still attached to her wrist, hampered her strokes, but she curled it up close to her body and kicked her way around the bow and toward the area where the water looked darker. Finally, when she could hold her breath no longer, she surfaced and gulped for new air. Nick surfaced almost immediately a few feet from her. They were under the wharf by just a few feet. Cam pointed to one of the pier supports and they treaded their way behind it.

As they tried to catch their breath, Cam saw a police boat round the yacht, its high-powered searchlight scanning the water.

"Down!" was all Cam could warn as she gulped air and dove beneath the water. The search beam lit the water above her head. She kicked down into the water, trying to keep from surfacing as the beam raked back and forth through the water above her. Her only hope was that Nick got down in time.
