Vic and Matt are settling into married life, but they don't want to get too settled. Late one evening, Matt suggests they run out to get a bite to eat, despite the hour. As much as Vic doesn't want to get dressed when he's comfortable in bed, he wants to please Matt more, so it's out they go.

Unfortunately, the gay bar they want to go to is closed, so they settle for somewhere else nearby. The place screams homophobic, but they hope to keep a low profile and eat quickly before heading home.

That is, until Vic notices someone who needs his help.

EXCERPT:

Matt grinned as he stole a third kiss. “Actually, are you hungry?”

Vic reached over and ran his hand down the length of Matt’s body beneath the blanket. “For this? Any time.”

With a laugh, Matt twisted away. “No, like real food.”

“I could eat,” Vic admitted. Then he looked past Matt to the alarm clock on the bedside table. “It’s after ten. Are you talking snacks? Or are we going to be doing dishes at midnight? I’m not up for a three-course meal or nothing.”

“We could DoorDash.”

Since the pandemic, when the gym was closed and Matt had to quarantine, he’d become a fan of delivery services, and DoorDash was his favorite. He’d even toyed with the idea of trying his hand at it, but after a few months the restrictions on indoor gyms finally lifted and he went back there instead. To be honest, he’d rather teach swimming than cuss at traffic as he drove around the city. That was Vic’s specialty. As a city bus driver, Vic worked through the pandemic -- the buses ran to the hospitals daily, so he was an essential employee, though Matt would’ve liked to have spent the days sequestered in their apartment together.

Though the pandemic was in the past, Matt still used DoorDash regularly. Mostly for lunch, but sometimes he’d order dinner from the Vietnamese restaurant they both liked that was on the other side of the city, so Vic didn’t pass it on his way home. To be honest, though, Matt wasn’t sure who would be open at this hour. Wawa, maybe, or Denny’s, were they still twenty-four hours? He wasn’t sure. Maybe he just wanted a reason for them to stay up together a bit longer, enjoying each other’s company. Was he even hungry?

The answer to that was yes. Sex always made him hungry. And, as an added bonus, watching Vic eat always made Matt horny as hell. So a late night snack -- or second supper, or whatever he wanted to call it -- would likely end with the two of them between the sheets again, entwined together, and there was nothing wrong with that as far as Matt was concerned.

“No, wait.” Matt frowned. “If we order in, one of us is going to have to get dressed and go downstairs to get the food.”

Their building had a security code on it now, installed during the pandemic, and Matt didn’t feel comfortable sharing it with delivery people. Whenever he ordered delivery, he met the driver at the door. At least they didn’t get the dog riled up when the drivers knocked on the door to their apartment, but that was only one reason why Matt didn’t like giving out the security code. The mail carrier might have it, but that didn’t mean all of Richmond needed it, too.

Vic frowned harder, which made Matt laugh. “Well, yeah,” he said, as if Matt were crazy to think otherwise. “We can’t go down there naked. If Mrs. K saw us --”

“She’d have a heart attack, I’m sure.” Matt didn’t relish the thought of calling an ambulance for their elderly landlady and ruining their whole evening just because he wanted a bite of something to eat.

Speaking of biting, he leaned in and playfully bit Vic’s nipple. It went from slightly interested to rock hard between his teeth, and he slipped a hand under the blankets at Vic’s waist to cup his lover’s dick, which was also stiffening. “If she saw this…”

With a grin, Vic joked, “We’d be out on the streets the next day.”

Pulling back, Matt sat up and took the remote from Vic to turn off the TV. “You know what? If we’re going to go through all that trouble --”

“Getting dressed?” Vic laughed. “I could pull on a pair of sweats and go get the food. But what’s open at this hour?”

“Thirsty’s.” It was a new gay bar downtown, one they’d stopped in a time or two. Neither of them liked the bar scene much, but the food there was better than most other dives around the city. It had a Nawlins theme and the alligator sauce was heavenly, though Matt was pretty sure it didn’t have real alligator in it. They did a drag show on Sundays he’d been meaning to catch at some point. Right now he could go for a bottle of beer and a cup of jambalaya. Too bad they weren’t on DoorDash.

He raised his eyebrows at Vic, who laughed again. “Really? At this hour?”

“When you say it like that,” Matt cautioned, “it makes us sound like a pair of old fuddy duddies. How’d we get so old without realizing it?”
